What Signal Over Noise does with your information, which cookies it uses, and how to reach the person responsible.

Who is responsible
Signal Over Noise is written and run by James Anthony Christian, known as Jim, from Carrer Casinos 26, 46183 L’Éliana, Valencia, Spain. He is the controller of the personal information described here. For questions about your information, or to use any of the rights below, email hello@signalovernoise.at.
What information is used
- Newsletter sign-ups. The sign-up form is provided by Kit (kit.com). When you subscribe, your email address, and any name you give, go to Kit, which stores the subscriber list and sends the newsletter. Kit also records whether you open emails and click links in them. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
- Reader support. If you choose to back the publication, the payment is taken on Kit’s product page, not on this site. Kit and its payment processor, Stripe, handle your payment details; Jim receives your name, email address and what you bought.
- Emails you send. If you write to Jim, he keeps your message and address to reply.
- Site operation. Cloudflare hosts the site and processes technical request data, such as your network address, browser details and the pages you request, to deliver and protect it. Searches on the site are handled by the same service and are not stored with your identity.
- Analytics, only if you accept. Google Analytics 4 counts visits and the pages read. It does not load at all until you choose “Accept” in the cookie notice.
Why, and on what basis
The newsletter is sent because you asked for it (your consent), and you can withdraw that consent by unsubscribing. Reader support is handled to deliver what you paid for (a contract) and to keep the records tax law requires. Hosting and security data is processed in Jim’s legitimate interest in keeping the site running and safe. Analytics runs only with your consent.
Cookies and site measurement
This site uses one necessary cookie, son_consent, which remembers your cookie choice for six months.
If you choose “Accept”, the site loads Google Analytics 4 from Google Ireland Limited, which acts as Jim’s processor. It sets the _ga and _ga_* cookies, which last up to two years, to tell repeat visits apart. Advertising features, Google signals and ad personalisation are switched off. Google may transfer the data to the United States under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, which Google LLC is certified under.
If you choose “Reject”, or do nothing, Google Analytics is never loaded. You can change your choice at any time with , which is also in the footer of every page. Withdrawing consent deletes the _ga cookies from this site and stops further collection; it does not undo measurement that took place while you had agreed.
Some pages also load content from other services, which receive your network address when they do: fonts load from Google Fonts, the newsletter form loads from Kit, and video thumbnails load from YouTube. Those services apply their own privacy policies. A YouTube video only starts loading, from the privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com domain, when you press play.
Who handles it
Cloudflare hosts and protects the site. Kit runs the newsletter and reader support. Google runs Google Analytics, for readers who accept it. Jim’s email provider holds correspondence. Nobody’s information is sold. Some of these providers process data outside the European Economic Area under their own transfer safeguards, such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
How long it is kept
Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe or ask for deletion. Purchase records are kept for as long as the law requires. Correspondence is kept while it is useful to the conversation. Google Analytics data is kept for fourteen months. Cloudflare keeps technical security data under its own schedules.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your personal information, and for it to be corrected, deleted, restricted or transferred to you. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests and withdraw any consent you gave, without affecting what happened before. If you think your information has been mishandled, you can complain to Spain’s data protection authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (opens in new tab), or to the authority where you live.
